Stunt Meat

I, like most other vegans I know, have a love/hate relationship with fake meats. When I first became vegan, I was eating veggieburgers, but I wanted nothing to do with fake hot dogs, deli slices, faux sausage, and other things I didn't eat as a non-vegan in the first place. I never ate more than half a hotdog, a bite of ham from someone else's sandwich, and I have no idea what real sausage tastes like.

But then, as those kinds of fake products started to get better at what they do, I started to slowly allow them. Some, like Tofurky Slices, are regulars in our household for a quick lunch sandwich (that's AA, mostly, but still, you get the idea).

All of this consumption of new fake meat products is nothing compared to the increased consumption that resulted from meeting all the fake meats that Food Fight! and Uwajimaya and other Asian stores have to offer around here. A trip to Food Fight! often involves stocking up on ham tube (now ham brick!), fake steaks and shrimp, etc.

On my last trip, I picked up veggie crab meat (it looked like the shrimp!) and veggie steak, and for whatever reason, I ate a lot of both tonight, and while I'm feeling better after our nice walk around the neighborhood, I still feel like one giant ball of fakey fake.
