Vegan MoFo: Feed a Fever, Feed a Cold

I couldn't remember which one gets starved and which one gets fed, but luckily, there's wiki answers! Ha!

While it's true I'm not all that hungry, I know that starving whatever I have -- a cold or a flu -- who knows, is not the way to go. Problem is, whenever I'm sick, I'm the least reliable source on what to do to get well. It's like the part of my brain that knows this information completely shuts down. And then the part that I remember, I'm too lazy to pull into action.

So far: we've got split pea soup, and AA is heating that up for lunch for me right now. I didn't mention in it in my last post, but split pea soup is historically a sick/comfort food for me cause it's the soup of "Ellen's Good For Ya Soup" in The Farm Cookbook and "Chicken Mama's Special Soup" in Instead of Chicken, Instead of Turkey, two of my old-school vegan faves. These were the soups I first made for myself in college, in the face of my mom, pleading with me over the phone (as I lived 8 hours away -- seems like next-door now!) to just eat chicken soup, just this once.

There's a late victory to that story, though, as my mom recently became a vegan "for health." Though it didn't stick (she was eating the same giant pot of kasha, beans, and cooked vegetables every day for lunch and dinner. terrifying!), I don't think she'll be inclined to question the health value of veganism anymore. But thankfully, my parents have been mostly supportive on that.

But when you're sick, it's a huge bummer. Your veganism can't protect you in a fight like it can when you talk about heart disease and cancers. You're a vegan, and you're sick, and the things your mommy made you always stay with you -- the "egg in a basket" (what was healthy about that?), the chicken soup, etc. -- even though they're gross, cause all I'd like to do is just stay in bed and have my mom do all the worrying for me.

In other news, it's a beautiful day that I'm mostly missing, though I just came back from the walk up and down the block to vote at our local Obama campaign headquarters. That felt good. Why'd it take so long?

I'm trying to drink a lot of kombucha, something I fell behind as I waited for my last batch to brew, and more tea. But what else? What do you guys eat and drink and take when you're sick?

unfortunately (or fortunately) I rarely lose my appetite. Bad headaches will do it though.
I do have to say, it's a little annoying when people blame veganism for sickness. Everyone gets sick, it doesn't matter what you eat. I won't rant though.

Oh, I hope my comments weren't meant to imply that I think veganism is to blame for sickness. Of course it's not. I've been vegan for a long time and never blame it for anything. Veganism has only been very good to me.

What I meant was, it's harder to claim the kind of "health superiority," if you will, of veganism over fighting your average cold bug. I don't think I've ever heard that that's the case, though I wish it were, and please direct me to articles I might send over to the rents if you know of them! That doesn't mean I think omni-ville fights infection more effectively either, that's for sure!

Veganism has nothing to do with my being sick. Working in a school does. I know this cause the healthiest year of my adult life was the one when I was neither a student nor a teacher!

But anyway, when my mom said she was going to try being vegan "for health reasons," I took that as a clear acknowledgment of the benefits of a vegan diet for health, something she always tried to repudiate (though only through implication). And that was really good for me to hear.

But perhaps I shouldn't try to be serious when I'm sick, as even things like soaking beans seems like a monumentally difficult task and perhaps I'm just too unclear to make meaning.

So, should you end up coming back to the comments, perhaps tell me what you eat or drink when you're sick? I'd love to get better soon! Thanks!

and p.s. Jess, good idea on the pho! AA seemed overwhelmed by the idea, but when I'm feeling a tad on the mend, but still in need of spicy sustenance, I will get it going!

Ha -- I just reread your comment, and maybe you were just responding to my mom's comments?

Well, anyway...

oh no, I didn't think you meant it was to blame. Sorry, I meant people often say to vegans that it is to blame, you know "eat a cheese burger and you'll feel better" :)

how does your kombucha compare to the store bought flavored sort? my fave is the spirulina green flavor, i can't remember the brand.

when i taught montessori to the littles, i was sick the entire year through. it was horrid. 3-5 year olds are pure mucus leaking machines.
