Island Foods is a little corner store that's the kind of place that's so close to my house that it's crazy that I don't go more often. We pass by there all the time, and almost any time we do, we sing a song "Island foods . . . da na na na na na na na na -- wah!" to the tune of Elton John's "Island Girl," a song that neither of know the lyrics for. So you'd think we'd be all over it, but it's also got a ton of stuff that I don't eat, and more often than not, well, oh let's stay with the positive. But what it lacks for in ambience, it makes up for it with quite a nice selection of some of the foods I had been hankering for: dals, fresh spices, tamrind, chana/besan flour, etc. Someone's making Indian food! I also picked up some taro root and coconut milk for this soup I really like to make. So I'm buzzing with ideas for the next few meals, though I still have a lot of my farmer's market produce to contend with before I tackle the taro, I think.
Still in my fridge:
1) brussel sprouts (I'm thinking if I get a sneaky peaky of VCON's version, that would be cool. I always roast them with cornmeal, my copy of the brussels I love from Sacred Chow in NYC, but I'm very interested in the addition of Indian spices!!)
2) celery root (where is AA and his casserole idea???)
3) bell peppers (six of them! what to do? something other than stuffing them?)
4) baked kuri squash (it will go in the taro soup, when i'm ready for it)
There's other stuff, but it's still early in the morning yet, and I have to take a shower. But those are the main things I'd like to cook through in the next few days. Ok, it's resolved. I'm not eating corndogs with Susie and pals this evening before seeing King Corn -- I want to make some food!*
Ok, you know what I have in my head: "It's your world, and I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut to move your butt...to the dance floor" I think this means today will be a very good day.**
*edited to add: I just got home from "helping" my co-worker fix a flat tire. I don't want to cook. I totally want a corndog.
**While it wasn't a bad day, it couldn't be called an especially good one. The song I thought of while trying to help loosen the nuts of the tire: "I'm just a girl, trying to loosen a lug nut, so move your butt...to the curb." Or something close to that.

Do you know that I adore red kuri squash? I do.
Do you know that I'm so jealous I didn't load up at the farmer's market this weekened? You could assume as much. I actually thought about buying peppers at the pike place market on saturday, but then realized that was silly.
jess,
if i wrote out my recipe for curry kuri, would you make it?
i totally bought peppers when i was in canada and living in nyc cause they are cheaper, so i totally get what you're saying!
michelle, are you saying you won't be my friend if I don't make it? what's in it? do you think I'd like it? I think I'd like it....
Huh? Of course it doesn't matter whether you make it or not!
I think you'd like it, but lemme think more on how to write it out before I say more! I'll email you!
love,
michelle
